Makrinitsa stands on the slope of the mountain next to Portaria with the main feature being the excellent preservation of its authentic character.
Eleftherios Venizelos, when he visited it, in 1934, called it “balcony of Pelion”, and not unjustly since it is famous for the exceptional view it offers to the city of Volos and the Pagasitic Gulf.

Makrynitsa is built at an altitude of 300 m. To 850 m. Approaching from Volos and 3 km before we arrive, we have in front of us the view of the whole village.
It was built in 1204, as a sign informs shortly before the main square. The village stands out for its architectural features, its well-preserved and restored mansions, its picturesque and masterful cobbled streets and the lush landscape with plane trees, chestnuts, walnuts and beeches.

Behind the church you will cool off on the marble fountain “Lions” or “Immortal Water”, a work of 1809. The water comes out of three bronze lion’s heads and is poured into a beautiful cistern surrounded by a low railing.
